Settlement Tanks

A settlement tank is an important piece of equipment for anyone looking to discharge water. Designed to handle large volumes and allowing to separate silt, settlement tanks are invaluable in numerous businesses and industries.

What Are Settlement Tanks?

On the outside, a settlement tank is just a large container, but it actually does a very important process when discharging water. The water goes in through one pipe and, when it comes out, it has been refined and cleaned. This process is highly effective at removing any number of submerged solids, as they separate before the water leaves the tank.

Where It’s Used

In short, if any business or individual wants to discharge ground water, they need a settlement tank. This is a requirement under environmental agency guidelines PPG1. The tank is vital in ensuring that any water dispersed in this manner is pure and filtered. Otherwise, the silt and other substances mixed into the water would be released as well.

Because of its diverse applications, settlement tanks can be found anywhere with a high focus on unfiltered liquids or pumping groundwater. Typical examples include the sewage and waste management industries, as well as companies that use up a lot of water and need some form of safe disposal system. The PPG6 guidelines from the environmental agency also reference construction and demolition sites as another example. In these instances, work often can’t begin until the area is dry and, since it can be hard to predict how much groundwater is in the soil, a large settlement tank is nearly always needed.

How It Works

Inside the tank is a series of three chambers or compartments. Water enters through the inlet port and is pumped into the first two chambers. During this part of the process, some time is given to allow the silt (and other suspended solids) to settle, separating itself from the water. When the water then enters the third segment, it is clean and free of the previous silt, which has been left behind. This can then be safely extracted via the discharge part. As for the solid material, this sinks to the bottom during the first two chambers, so it can be easily collected and disposed of via the correct methods.

How Are Settlement Tanks Made?

Settlement tanks are often made from a strong, durable material, such as various metals. These are water resistance and can be easily cleaned, to remove the remaining silt leftover from the process. Similarly, they can be built to various sizes and dimensions to suit a company’s needs. This is worth noting, since some industries have a very large groundwater pumping operations and, as a result, require large tanks to match the large volumes of water being extracted.

More than just a requirement, settlement tanks are a very effective way of sifting through large amounts of water, removing silt and other possible pollutants. They ensure the water that emerges is safe and within environmental standards, which is vital for numerous industries. Furthermore, they’re simple to operate and doing a highly efficient job, proving themselves as reliable hardware.
